Forschungsschwerpunkte von Peter Kugler sind die Monetäre Ökonomie, Angewandet Ökonometrie und Wirtschaftsgeschichte. In seinen Veröffentlichungen hat er sich unter anderem mit Themenstellungen wie der Fristenstruktur der Zinssätze, der Bestimmung von Wechselkursen, Währungssystemen sowie der Wirkung der Geldpolitik auf Inflation und reale Grössen aus theoretischer, empirischer und historischer Perspektive befasst.
