The Coal Challenge: Climate Change, Employment, and Energy Politics
22.01.2020 - Symposium
Place: Faculty of Business and Economics (WWZ) | University of Basel
Time: 5 - 7 pm
Coal-fired power generation is the single largest source of CO2 emissions. To meet the Paris climate goals, a large part of the world’s coal reserves must remain unused. At the symposium "The Coal Challenge" experts from international organizations, NGOs, energy industry and academia will discuss pathways under which relevant stakeholders can or cannot agree to phase out coal.
In many countries, coal-fired power generation still makes up an important part of the generation mix. In others, a great portion of investments & pensions go into fossil fuel industries. While policies and investment patterns are changing in some places, this is not the case everywhere.
At our COALSTAKE symposium, including a public event on January 22nd (starting at 5:00pm), we discuss the challenges around coal, focusing on the impact of climate change and the opportunities and challenges of coal transitions. With a renowned keynote speaker from Canada and dynamic international experts representing think tanks, international organizations, business and academia, the public event promises to become an exciting gathering that you should not miss.
