Registration for Graduation (master's degree)

In order to complete your studies, you must apply for graduation. If you do not apply for graduation, we have to assume that you still want to continue your studies. You will only submit your application after all coursework has been completed. Once this is the case, you will create a module allocation, upload it to ADAM and then register - also via ADAM.

The application for graduation as of fall semester 2022 is possible from 1 December to  26 February 2024 at the latest. If your academic achievements have not been recorded in your Online Services account by then, please contact the Dean of Studies's Office. See also FAQ.

After you have completed all the coursework in accordance with the study regulations and the study guide and these have been entered in your student account, you create a module allocation in the Online-Services and upload it to ADAM (available from 1 December 2023 to 26 February 2024). A special post inbox folder has been set up for this purpose. Important: Once you have uploaded the module allocation, you may no longer change it. Detailed instructions on how to create the module allocation can be found in the information sheet "Module allocation in Online Services (Master's degree)".

In a 2nd step, you register for graduation. This registration also takes place via ADAM (available from 1 December 2023 to 26 February  2024). The following information is collected during registration:

  • Personal data
  • Master program / major
  • Future plans for spring semester 2024 (exmatriculation or change of study program)

In addition to the application for graduation, you must enter a re-registration or an exmatriculation in the Online-Services. If you wish to leave the University of Basel after completing your master's degree (exmatriculation), please select "graduation" as the reason.

If you remain enrolled at the University of Basel and wish to change to another degree program, select the option "change of degree program". Without the applcation for graduation, the status "Master's degree" will remain and you will not be entitled to a degree.

After your application has been processed, you will receive a stamped degree confirmation and provisional degree transcript (sent by post).

If the assessment of your master's thesis is the last open achievement, you will receive the master's thesis assessment together with the degree confirmation and the provisional certificate.
Should you continue your studies at the University of Basel, e.g. in a doctoral program or in another program, please apply for a "change of degree program". If you wish, we can send your provisional degree transcript directly to the relevant office.

The Faculty of Business and Economics usually holds a graduation ceremony twice a year. For graduates from the spring semester, the ceremony usually takes place at the end of October. For graduates as of the end of the fall semester, the graduation ceremony is held in April.

FAQ

Please check the following points:

  • Are you logged into ADAM with your unibas-email address?
  • Is the registration period for graduation still open?

If you can answer "yes" to both questions, then send an email to the Dean of Studies' Office.

If you are unable to access ADAM and/or no longer have access to your university e-mail address, please contact the IT Service Desk of the University of Basel.

You will receive the following documents upon graduation:

  • Master's degree certificate (bilingual in German and English)
  • Master's degree transcript (original in German and an English translation)
  • Diploma Supplement (in German and English)

During the office hours of the Dean of Studies' Office you have the possibility to view a sample folder with the transcript, certificate and diploma supplement.

In addition, you will receive the following documents:

  • Overview of the grade distribution of all degrees at the Faculty of Business and Economics during the last five years
  • Additional sheet: "non-applied credits" (if applicable).
This sheet shows any surplus academic achievements that you have acquired at the University of Basel but which have not yet been used for any other degree. This also includes any additional requirements that you had to complete as part of your admission to the master's program. Excluded from this are language courses and credit transfers.

As a rule, all academic achievements are recorded in your online account by the end of the semester. Assessment of master's theses can be reported up to one week before the new semester begins (start of lectures). The registration deadline for the master's degree takes this deadline into account.

Should you still not be able to meet this deadline (e.g. because of open make-up examinations due to illness or because grade reports from an exchange semester (incl. EUCOR) are still outstanding), you need to inform us by e-mail within the published registration deadline. You will then be granted an extension to submit the module allocation.

In order to be able to submit the application for graduation, you must upload the module assignment with all coursework to be used (incl. master's thesis) in ADAM. For this reason, it is not possible to register for graduation as long as you still have open credits.

The evaluation of the master's thesis can be registered until one week before the new semester begins (start of lectures). The registration deadline for the master's degree takes this deadline into account.

Should you still not be able to meet the registration deadline (e.g. because of open make-up examinations due to illness or because grade reports from an exchange semester (incl. EUCOR) are still outstanding), you need to inform us by e-mailwithin the published registration deadline. You will then be granted an extension to submit the module allocation.

After the deadline, there is no entitlement to late registration for graduation.

If you are planning to graduate but still have outstanding coursework from make-up examinations due to illness or are waiting for grade notifications from an exchange semester (incl. EUCOR), you need to inform us by e-mailwithin the published registration deadline. You will then be granted an extension to submit the module allocation.

Create the module allocation and register in ADAM. After your application has been processed, you will receive an electronic degree confirmation. If you wish, we can also send you a provisional degree transcript and a stamped degree confirmation (by post). In addition, it is possible for us to send your provisional degree transcript directly to the relevant office.
