Diversity and Personal Integrity

The University of Basel, as a workplace and educational institution for approximately 19,000 people from over 100 nations, is deeply committed to diversity, recognizing its vital role in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment. The university values the unique experiences and perspectives brought by its members and actively promotes their diverse talents, regardless of age, religion, gender, gender identity, cultural background, language, social or professional status, lifestyle, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or disability.

Diversity at the University of Basel is seen as a powerful source of innovation, driving an open, creative, and productive culture in both work and thought. It presents both a challenge and a guarantee of excellence within the university.

A genuine diversity culture means making the university’s commitment to diversity visible and integral to its identity. Active diversity management fosters this culture across teaching, research, and administration, ensuring a non-discriminatory, accessible environment. It emphasizes equality, supports families, and operates on three key levels:

  • Diversity Management
In collaboration with various university units, a comprehensive diversity strategy is implemented to ensure that processes in education, research, and administration are free from discrimination and barriers. The university also regularly reviews its processes, strategies, and legal frameworks to guarantee equal opportunities for all genders and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Gender and Diversity-Oriented Excellence
The University of Basel is committed to nurturing the potential of all its members, helping them achieve their goals, while working to significantly increase the representation of women at higher academic and professional levels.
  • Personal Integrity
The University of Basel upholds a respectful work culture where the personal integrity of all employees is honored and protected. The university has a zero-tolerance policy toward sexism, sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, and abuse of power. The Office for Personal Integrity is dedicated to promoting and safeguarding this culture of respect.

The Faculty of Business and Economics is fully committed to the University’s diversity and inclusion agenda. The faculty values not only the presence of diverse perspectives but also actively fosters an inclusive environment where all individuals feel respected, valued, and able to contribute their unique experiences
