Teaching

Our teaching comprises both an introduction to our research methods and a sound education in accounting regulation. Regarding the latter, emphasis is put on the Swiss commercial code at the Bachelor level and the IFRS at the Master level.

Course material will be provided on ADAM, the official Learning Platform at the University of Basel. Apart from serving as a platform for the distribution of content, ADAM facilitates the collaboration and communication among students and teachers as well as among research and administrative staff. Autumn Term

10126-01 Einführung in Buchführung und Rechnungslegung (lecture)  | U. Schiller | Bachelor | 6 KP

Inhalt:

Jeweils montags* findet die Vorlesung statt und es wird ein Übungsblatt aufgeschaltet.

Donnerstags finden Tutorien in 2 Gruppen statt, in denen das Übungsblatt der jeweiligen Woche besprochen wird. Die erste Gruppe um 10:15 richtet sich an Studierende, die lediglich zur Selbstkontrolle kommen wollen. Die Lösungen zu den Aufgaben werden nur in Kurzform präsentiert. In der zweiten Gruppe um 12:15 findet eine ausführlichere Besprechung statt mit breiteren Möglichkeiten, Fragen zu stellen. In welche Gruppe Sie kommen, steht Ihnen frei.

Jeweils freitags ist ein abschliessendes Online-Quiz zu lösen. In den Wochen 2 bis 9 müssen Sie mindestens 7 der 8 Quizze bestehen, um zur Abschlussprüfung am Semesterende zugelassen zu werden.

Sämtliche Unterlagen befinden sich auf ADAM.

* Die Vorlesung am Montag, 19.9. wird durch ein Online-Video ersetzt.

This course is addressed to decision makers in firms and in the economy. The aim is to help managers and economists to understand the information that is conveyed by financial statements. We start with the axiomatic properties of financial statements and then develop the fundamentals of financial statement analysis. To this end, we identify value drivers of a firm’s equity. Moreover, we examine key elements that help to understand value growth.

Spring Term

10139-01 Nationale und internationale Rechnungslegung (lecture) | A. Perucca | Bachelor | 6 KP

Die Veranstaltung nationale und internationale Rechnungslegung baut auf den Inhalten aus der Veranstaltung Einführung in die Buchführung und Rechnungslegung auf. Es wird vorausgesetzt, dass die Studierenden die Grundsätze der Rechnungslegung und Buchführung nach Obligationenrecht verstanden haben.

Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung werden das Rahmenkonzept sowie spezifische Standards von Swiss GAAP FER erläutert. Insbesondere werden Wahlrechte und Beurteilungsspielräume, die nach Swiss GAAP FER wahrgenommen werden können, im Detail erläutert und mit Praxisbeispielen illustriert.

Ausserdem werden Vor- und Nachteile der Anwendung von Swiss GAAP FER im Vergleich zu internationalen Standards wie IFRS oder US GAAP erläutert. Dazu werden generelle Unterschiede in den Rahmenkonzepten sowie in den spezifischen Standards erarbeitet.

Die Vorlesung ist dabei eingebettet in das von Prof. Dr. Schiller geführte Gesamtkonzept der Veranstaltungen zum Thema Accounting am WWZ und Bestandteil des Abkommens zwischen ExpertSuisse und der Universität Basel. Bei erfolgreichem absolvieren der entsprechenden Veranstaltungen (https://www.expertsuisse.ch/dispensation-wp), kann bei der Ausbildung zum dipl. Wirtschaftsprüfer bei ExpertSuisse ein Antrag auf Dispensation von der Modulprüfung Accounting & Finance gestellt werden.

The objective of this course is to enable students to understand and analyse financial statements of single legal entities according to the IFRSs. Students will:

  1. Expand their technical proficiency in accounting for physical and financial transactions, and in the preparation of financial statements, thereby developing the conceptual understanding for the scope of the Standards, and the recognition and measurement of assets and liabilities.
  2. Learn how to read and analyse financial statements and, ultimately, prepare a financial statement analysis.

The course aims at leading interested master students towards modern research questions in the field of the Economics of Accounting. We will introduce selected contemporary research topics in the field by discussing a number of important research papers. Students will get the task to solve related analytical problems. A background in game theory is needed. Mathematical knowledge should include calculus, especially differentiation and integration.
