Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Faculty of Business and Economics meets for a Site Visit once a year. The University of Basel's SABs aim to support the organizational units in striving for research excellence and in their quality development. To do so, recognized experts from outside the university (peers) assess the quality and innovativeness of research and make recommendations from their external perspective.

Jean-Robert Tyran, Chair

University of Vienna

Jean-Robert Tyran is Professor of Public Economics at the University of Vienna, Director of the Vienna Center for Experimental Economics and former Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs at the University of Vienna from 2018-2022. He is also a Research Fellow at CEPR London, CESifo Munich and EPRU Copenhagen. In his research, Jean-Robert Tyran mainly investigates how institutions like markets and democracy are shaped by bounded rationality and social preferences.

Karen Pittel

ifo Institut

Karen Pittel is Director of the ifo Center for Energy, Climate, and Resources and Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics, University of Munich. She is also a Research Fellow at CESifo Munich and Co-chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change. Karen Pittel’s research focus is on the transformation of the energy system towards carbon neutrality as well as the design of optimal energy and climate policies.

Catherine Tinsley

Georgetown University

Catherine H.Tinsley is the Raffini Professor of Management at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Area Chair for the Management Faculty, Faculty Director of the Georgetown University Women’s Leadership Institute, and a Senior Policy Scholar at McDonough’s Center for Business and Public Policy. She also sits on Kate Spade & Co.’s Social Impact Council. In her research, she studies how leaders can improve their decision making and the impact of good decision architecture to improve organizational performance.

Beatrice Weder di Mauro

Geneva Graduate Institute

Beatrice Weder di Mauro is Professor of International Economics at the Geneva Graduate Institute. She is also President of CEPR London, the leading European network of economists, and Research Professor at the Emerging Markets Institute of INSEAD. Her research interests are in international macroeconomics.

Stephen Cecchetti

Brandeis International Business School

Stephen G. Cecchetti is Rosen Family Chair in International Finance at the Brandeis International Business School and former Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the BIS in Basel from 2008 to 2013. He is also a Research Associate at NBER, Research Fellow at CEPR London, and Vice-Chair of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board. Cecchetti’s research interests include monetary policy, the economics of financial regulation, and macroeconomic theory. During his term at the BIS, he worked on establishing new standards for financial stability after the financial crisis.

Eckhard Janeba

University of Mannheim

Eckhard Janeba is a Professor of Economics at the University of Mannheim and a Research Associate at ZEW Mannheim. He is also a Research Fellow at CESifo Munich as well as Chairman of the Board of Academic Advisors to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Eckhard Janeba’s main fields of interest in research are public finance, international trade, and the impacts of globalization on government action.
