Abstract
This presentation reviews recent research on the anatomy and dynamics of the international monetary system. It discusses the role of the US in international finance and contrasts it with the emerging role of the People’s Bank of China. Using high-frequency data on foreign investor holdings, it will analyse the recent turmoil in international markets and the emergence of crypto currencies.

Hélène Rey, O.B.E., F.B.A. is Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School. Her research focuses on external imbalances, monetary policy and international capital flows. She is an editor of the Annual Review of Economics, a vice president of CEPR, a member of the Bellagio Group, of the Group of Thirty and of the external advisory group to the managing director of the IMF. She was a member of the Haut Conseil de Stabilité Financière French Macroprudential Authority between 2014 and 2024. Currently Hélène Rey serves as President of the European Economic Association.
