Admission individual doctorate

Doctorate available in
Business and Economics (Wirtschaftswissenschaften)

General Requirements
Admission requires a master's degree in business and/or economics with an excellent academic performance.  Degrees from other fields will also be considered (e.g., social science, mathematics, physics, or engineering). Excellent academic performance is equivalent to a final grade average of at least 5.0 in the Swiss Grading System. For non-Swiss degrees see the following formula.

Academic qualifications from universities or higher education institutions recognized by the University of Basel may be recognized as entirely or partly equivalent by the Doctoral Examinations Committee. Candidates may be granted admission on condition that they make up missing course credits.

Possible requirements shall be determined upon consultation with the Doctoral Examinations Committee and stipulated by the Office of the Rector in conjunction with the granting of admission. Requirements shall be set out in writing in the individual candidate’s doctoral studies agreement.

A Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) does not qualify for admission to doctoral studies at the University of Basel.

Application

To become a Ph.D. student at the University of Basel, your application must be submitted by the application deadline. Detailed information about the application and admission process to study at the university can be found at the Student Services' website.

Further documents required according to the Faculty of Business and Economics:

  • Description of the envisaged dissertation project
  • Request by the main supervisor to the doctoral admissions commission to be entrusted with the supervision of the dissertation in question Download form
  • Declaration concerning the availability of the doctoral student for the dissertation with information on amount of time allocated
